The HPV Vaccine Does More Than Prevent Cervical Cancer, New Research Shows

New research suggests the HPV vaccine protects against far more cancers than previously documented. A large study examining medical records of over 1.4 million Americans found that people vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) were significantly less likely to develop cancers of the head and neck, not just cervical cancer. The findings provide real-world evidence that HPV vaccination offers broader cancer prevention benefits than the vaccine's original purpose.

What Cancers Can HPV Vaccination Actually Prevent?

HPV is an extremely common sexually transmitted virus that most people will encounter at some point in their lives. While many HPV types are harmless, certain high-risk strains can linger in the body and increase cancer risk. Researchers have long known that HPV causes the vast majority of cervical cancers in women, but the virus is also a major leading cause of several other cancers affecting both men and women.

The new study, published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, analyzed medical records comparing roughly 700,000 people vaccinated against HPV to a similar-sized group who received other non-HPV vaccines. Researchers tracked their health outcomes for up to 13 years. By the end of the study period, only 40 people in the vaccinated group had been diagnosed with head or neck cancer, compared to 130 people in the unvaccinated group. Vaccinated individuals were especially less likely to develop oropharyngeal cancers, which occur in the middle part of the throat behind the mouth.

Who Benefits Most From HPV Vaccination?

The protective effect of HPV vaccination was most pronounced in people who received their first dose between ages 9 and 26. In this age group, vaccinated people were roughly 68% less likely to develop head or neck cancer compared to unvaccinated peers. Researchers observed a potential reduction in cancer risk even among older vaccinated individuals, though the difference was not statistically significant. This age-related pattern makes biological sense: older people are more likely to have already caught high-risk HPV infections before vaccination, so the vaccine cannot protect them from infections they already carry.

How to Maximize HPV Vaccination Protection

  • Timing Matters: The vaccine is most effective when given between ages 9 and 26, before most people have been exposed to high-risk HPV strains. Starting vaccination early in this window provides the strongest protection.
  • Complete the Full Series: HPV vaccination requires multiple doses to achieve full protection. Staying up-to-date with the complete vaccination schedule ensures maximum cancer prevention benefits.
  • Don't Assume You're Protected: If you were vaccinated after age 26, you may still benefit from the vaccine, though the protective effect is less certain. Discuss your individual risk factors with a healthcare provider.

Other studies have found similar links between HPV vaccination and reduced risk of additional non-cervical cancers, including penile cancer in men. However, researchers emphasize that these findings demonstrate an association between vaccination and lower cancer rates, not a definitive cause-and-effect relationship. Because HPV-related cancers often take years or even decades to develop after exposure, it will take additional time to fully understand how effective vaccination is at preventing these cancers.

Despite the vaccine's proven benefits, vaccination rates in the United States remain lower than in many other high-income countries. As of 2024, only about 63% of U.S. teens were up-to-date with their HPV shots. In comparison, countries like Denmark and Spain are expected to reach 90% coverage by the end of the decade. The HPV vaccine is now widely recommended for everyone starting as early as age 9, yet uptake in the U.S. lags behind international peers.

The research underscores an important public health message: HPV vaccination offers protection against multiple types of cancer, not just cervical cancer. For young people and their parents considering vaccination, these findings add another compelling reason to ensure the vaccine series is completed during the most protective years of life.
