This characterization directly contradicts the study's actual conclusions and methodology.
The same epidemiologist also appeared on "The Matt Gaetz Show" on the conservative network OAN to share the alleged findings, and a video of that appearance circulated alongside various versions of the false claim. Some versions of the claim circulated with links to stories that cited only other social media posts rather than the actual peer-reviewed research.
What Does the Research Actually Recommend?
The authors of the Cancer Epidemiology study concluded their findings by emphasizing that their research "demonstrates the importance of adequate and frequent sunscreen use and minimization of exposure to UV light, particularly in individuals with fair skin." They stressed that understanding how genetic variation interacts with demographic, environmental, and behavioral factors is essential to fully appreciate the complex nature of skin cancer risk.
Previous investigations into sunscreen safety have also addressed other viral claims about the product. A Snopes fact-check examined claims that sunscreen enters the bloodstream and removes the body's natural defense against cancer by blocking vitamin D. While it is true that sunscreen can be absorbed into the bloodstream, there is no evidence that it causes cancer or damages the immune system.
