The number of single people pursuing these options has grown substantially over the past decade, with fertility clinics now offering tailored programs specifically designed for solo parents navigating the medical, financial, and legal complexities of family building on their own terms.

What Are the Main Fertility Pathways for Single Parents?

Single people have more clinical options today than ever before. The choice among them depends on age, ovarian or sperm reserve, medical history, and whether you plan to carry the pregnancy yourself. Between 2012 and 2022 in the United Kingdom, the number of women receiving fertility treatment alone increased significantly, a trend mirrored in the U.S. .

The primary pathways include:

  • IUI with donor sperm: A less invasive first step for single women under 35 with good ovarian reserve and open fallopian tubes. The procedure places prepared donor sperm directly into the uterus around ovulation, typically completed in a single office visit per cycle. Success rates per cycle are lower than IVF, so multiple attempts are common, with most cycles completed within four to six weeks.
  • IVF with donor sperm: The most common route for single women when IUI has failed or when age or ovarian reserve makes IUI a lower-probability choice. Standard IVF involves ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization with donor sperm in a laboratory, and embryo transfer. Per-cycle success rates are meaningfully higher than IUI, particularly for women under 38, with a full cycle taking four to six weeks from stimulation start to transfer.
  • IVF with donor eggs: Recommended when ovarian reserve is diminished or age-related egg quality is a concern. Donor egg cycles carry higher per-cycle success rates than cycles using a patient's own eggs, especially for patients over 40, though the tradeoff is additional cost and time required for donor matching, which can add several weeks to the timeline.
  • Embryo adoption: Using a donated embryo from another family's IVF cycle. This is the most affordable donor-assisted route, though the selection of available embryos is more limited than with fresh donor gametes. The recipient undergoes a frozen embryo transfer cycle, which is less physically demanding than a full IVF stimulation cycle.
  • Gestational surrogacy: The primary path for single men and for single women who cannot safely carry a pregnancy. The process involves creating embryos through IVF, matching with a carrier through an agency or independent arrangement, completing legal contracts, and coordinating the transfer. Surrogacy is the most time-intensive and costly pathway.
  • Fertility preservation: Egg or sperm freezing for those not ready to conceive now but wanting to protect future options. This is not a treatment pathway on its own but a planning tool for those not yet ready to conceive.

Cost is a significant consideration for single parents pursuing fertility treatment. IVF cycles typically cost between $15,000 and $30,000 or more, while gestational surrogacy can reach substantially higher amounts. Many patients pay out of pocket, though insurance coverage is expanding in some states.

The financial burden extends beyond the initial treatment cycle. Storage fees for frozen eggs or sperm can accumulate quickly. What Happens at Your First Fertility Consultation?

The first consultation with a fertility specialist determines your fertility potential, narrows the list of appropriate pathways, and gives your care team the baseline data needed to build a treatment plan. Coming prepared makes a real difference in how quickly you can move forward.

During this visit, your physician will conduct a complete medical history review, including menstrual history, prior pregnancies, surgeries, chronic conditions, and any medications. You should bring records from previous fertility evaluations if you have them. Several key tests are typically ordered:

  • AMH blood test: Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) measures ovarian reserve and is one of the most informative single markers for predicting response to stimulation. Results typically return within a few days.
  • FSH and estradiol hormones: These hormones give additional context on ovarian function and are usually drawn on cycle day 2 or 3 at the same blood draw as AMH.

How Does Egg Freezing Work for Single Parents?

Egg freezing has become increasingly popular among single people planning for future parenthood. The procedure involves taking unfertilized eggs from the ovaries and storing them at subzero temperatures until the person is ready to have them fertilized and implanted. Success rates depend heavily on the person's age when the eggs were frozen and the total number of mature eggs stored.

Research published in Fertility and Sterility found that women under age 40 who froze their eggs had increasing success rates based on the number of eggs stored. Those who froze fewer than 10 eggs had a 58.3% success rate, while those who froze between 10 and 14 eggs achieved a 66.7% success rate. Women who froze 15 to 19 eggs saw a 67.9% success rate, and those who froze 20 or more eggs achieved an 81.8% success rate.

Age significantly affects both the number and quality of eggs that can be retrieved. Those who froze at least 20 eggs before age 35 had an 88.9% chance of a live birth. The rate dropped to 80% for those between 35 and 37, and again to 72.7% for women ages 38 to 40.

"The younger the egg is, the more likely it is to have success and the more likely you can have that egg over the course of your reproductive lifetime. Generally, we recommend in the later 20s or early 30s," explained Dr. Jennifer Blakemore, a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist at NYU Langone Health.

The biggest advance in egg freezing has been vitrification, or flash-freezing, which largely replaced older, slower freezing techniques since the mid-2000s. It has drastically increased the survival rate of thawed eggs from 65% to 85%, with fertilization rates also higher at 79% compared to 74% with slow freezing.

However, most women don't end up thawing their eggs. A 2026 review found that after 10 years, 81% of women who froze their eggs between ages 34 and 38 were still storing them, while just 7.6% had returned to thaw them. This doesn't mean the procedure was pointless; some women conceive naturally, use IVF with fresh eggs, or simply haven't reached the point at which they want to use them.

What About Fertility Preservation for Cancer Patients?

For single people diagnosed with cancer, fertility preservation has become a critical option. The field of oncofertility, which bridges oncology and reproductive health, emerged around 2006 and has expanded significantly as more reproductive-age patients have been diagnosed and better treatments have prolonged their survival.

The rise in cancer diagnoses among younger people is stark. Diagnosis rates in people under age 50 have increased 22% from 2000 to 2023, according to the National Cancer Institute. Breast cancer rates for women younger than 50 are rising about 1.4% each year.

At Boston IVF, a network of fertility clinics in 10 states, the number of cancer patients in its New England clinics who came in for a consultation rose from 19 in 2015 to 183 in 2025. One Boston-based team found that the number of cancer patients nationwide who preserved their eggs more than doubled between 2014 and 2019. From 2022 to 2025, referrals for fertility preservation for oncology patients at Brigham and Women's Hospital increased by 49%.

The biggest challenge in fertility preservation for cancer patients is the time pressure. Many patients need to find a fertility specialist and undergo preservation, sometimes a weeks-long process, before their cancer treatments start. Some fertility clinics now prioritize cancer patients, allowing them to skip months-long wait lists and be seen within 48 hours.

Cost remains a barrier. Without insurance, embryo freezing can cost up to $20,000, according to the Alliance for Fertility Preservation, but insurance coverage is expanding. In 2017, Connecticut and Rhode Island became the first two states to pass legislation mandating the coverage of preservation for people with medical conditions including cancer. New Hampshire and Maine followed, and Massachusetts passed legislation in 2024. However, these laws only apply to certain health plans, so many patients, including those on Medicaid, don't receive benefits.

Single parents pursuing fertility treatment now have more options, support systems, and clinical expertise than ever before.
