What Pregnancy Complications Predict Future Heart Problems?
The most common pregnancy complications that signal increased cardiovascular risk include preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm labor, placental abruption, and delivering very low birthweight babies. Women who experienced these complications have been found to have a several-fold increased risk of mortality from cardiovascular causes compared to women with uncomplicated pregnancies.
Research shows that women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) face particularly concerning long-term risks. Women who experienced gestational diabetes face particularly serious risks because diabetes causes damage to multiple organs over time, including the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes, and nerves. Even the seemingly mild condition of "carbohydrate intolerance" carries significant health risks. A meta-analysis of 15 studies involving 760,925 participants found that pre-diabetes conditions were associated with increased stroke risk.
