Wildfire smoke blanketing much of America isn't just ash and soot; it's carrying dangerous heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and mercury that traveled hundreds of miles from contaminated Canadian soil. As more than 850 active wildfires burn through Canada's boreal forests and peatlands, the smoke has drifted across at least 20 U.S. states, affecting over 100 million Americans with air quality alerts. What's Actually in the Smoke Reaching Your Home?
When wildfire smoke travels, it carries far more than burnt wood. A 2026 chemistry review flagged elevated heavy metals like lead and mercury, along with toxic plastic byproducts called dioxins and furans, in the smoke from major destructive fires.
How Far Do These Toxins Travel?
The metals don't stay local. A California Air Resources Board analysis traced lead and arsenic from the Camp Fire traveling nearly 150 miles through the air, from Chico all the way down to San Jose, riding the smoke the whole way. When California's Eaton and Palisades fires tore through neighborhoods packed with lead paint, old wiring, car batteries, and electronics in 2025, independent soil testing afterward found arsenic, lead, and mercury exceeding safety thresholds by more than three times in some areas, even after federal cleanup crews had already declared the neighborhoods safe.
The lesson is stark: when the smoke comes, it carries the neighborhood it burned through right along with it. This means communities hundreds of miles away from the actual fires are being exposed to contaminants from areas they've never visited.
What Are the Health Risks Beyond Immediate Breathing Problems?
The health picture on wildfire smoke is already concerning even without the metal load. Research shows that a modest increase in wildfire-specific fine particles raises same-day all-cause mortality by 0.15%, respiratory hospitalizations by 0.25%, and respiratory emergency room visits by over a third of a percent. A 2024 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences put wildfire smoke's annual death toll in the U.S. at more than 10,000 lives.
Beyond the immediate coughing fits and burning eyes, researchers at Harvard and Mount Sinai found that cardiorespiratory harm from wildfire smoke can linger for months after the fires go cold. The risks that stay with you include ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia, stroke, hypertension, and pneumonia. PM2.5 exposure has also been linked to increased lung cancer risk and measurable cognitive decline.
The heavy metal problem stacked on top of this is particularly troubling. There is no known safe level of lead exposure, and lead accumulates in the body over time, hitting the nervous system, the kidneys, and especially children's developing brains the hardest. Arsenic and mercury aren't any kinder. Smoke inhalation symptoms don't always announce themselves on the day of exposure either; some effects surface 24 to 48 hours later, which is exactly why people shrug off a smoky afternoon and then find themselves struggling hard to breathe two days down the road.
Who Is Most at Risk?
Children, pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or heart disease carry the heaviest risk. How to Protect Yourself During Smoke Events
- Check Real Air Quality Data: Know your actual air quality, not just what the sky looks like. Pull up AirNow.gov and check your local PM2.5 readings before you head outside to do chores. Smoke can pack a dangerous punch even on days that look only slightly hazy rather than full-on orange.
- Wear a Properly Fitted Respirator: A cloth mask or surgical mask does essentially nothing against fine particles. A properly fitted N95, KN95, or FFP2 respirator filters out roughly 95% of those particles and can cut your real-world exposure by a factor of ten.
