- Recombinant Shingles Vaccine: Research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found approximately a 24% lower relative risk of dementia in people who received at least one dose of the recombinant shingles vaccine over the following four years.
- BCG Vaccine: Scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital discovered that the Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccine, typically used to prevent tuberculosis, appeared to reach the central nervous system and alter immune function in ways that might protect against Alzheimer's disease.

Additionally, shingles increases stroke risk for up to a year after infection, and stroke is a major risk factor for dementia.

Does Vaccine Dose Matter?
Research comparing standard-dose and high-dose flu vaccines revealed an interesting finding. The high-dose flu vaccine, commonly given to adults 65 and older, performed approximately 15% better than the standard dose in reducing dementia risk. Women showed an even more pronounced benefit from the high-dose vaccine compared to men, which researchers found particularly noteworthy given that women develop Alzheimer's disease twice as often as men.
Importantly, the anti-dementia effects of the flu vaccine lasted about two years, considerably longer than the vaccine's protection against influenza itself, which typically lasts four to six months.

- Ask About High-Dose Options: If you're eligible for a high-dose flu vaccine, discuss with your healthcare provider whether this option might be appropriate for you based on your individual health profile.
What Do Experts Say About These Findings?
Researchers emphasize that current evidence shows associations, not definitive proof of causation. More rigorous research, including randomized clinical trials comparing vaccines to placebos, is needed to establish whether vaccines actually prevent dementia or whether other factors explain the observed associations.
"We need to understand the underlying mechanisms and conduct more research to determine if vaccines can truly prevent dementia," explained Paul Schultz, MD, a professor and neurologist at UTHealth Houston who led early research on the flu vaccine and Alzheimer's connection.

One concern researchers had to address was "healthy vaccinee bias," the tendency for people who regularly receive vaccines to be healthier overall than those who don't. By comparing people who received standard-dose vaccines to those who received high-dose vaccines, researchers could better isolate the vaccine's specific effects from general health behaviors.
The findings come at a time when Americans are increasingly seeking ways to support healthy aging and reduce dementia risk. While vaccines have long been recognized for preventing infectious diseases, their potential role in brain health represents a new frontier in understanding how immune system training might protect long-term cognitive function.
